It’s About Time was many years in the making. The songs span most of my songwriting career, from Aphrodite (1986) to Time and Experience (2014). There is a lot of love in this album! The songs cover a lot of ground, but carry a common theme of living life fully, engaging to the max in the blink of time we are here. I am grateful to my friends and fellow musicians who put their heart and brilliance into this recording with me. Here’s hoping this music will help you heal, grow, love, and experience your own life more fully.

This song has two voices in conversation—the scared and stuck one, and the strong and wise one. Both are in all of us. It also references the “impossible task” in fairy tales that the young woman must often face: weaving a roomful of straw into gold. Somehow, there is a way through to victory, but it always starts with being truthful in the moment and finding a way to love ourselves.

You’re stuck here
Like a bad dream
With your clothes off
In the classroom
And you can’t remember the answer to the question
The teacher is asking you

And you’re open
Like a faucet
That just keeps on
with its drippin’
Or a broken zipper on your favorite pair of pants—yeah
Are you sitting on a goldmine
Funny you should ask…

Cuz I breathe in
And I breathe out
But I can’t reach
To the center of the earth today
Seems I’m emptier than a garbage truck
Before the morning run

And I crave love
Like a baby that’s neglected
Am I weak to feel this way?
You’re in a tower with a room of straw
Face this task
Are you sitting on a goldmine
Funny you should ask…

And I break into the morning like it’s phony glass
It only cuts you up if you hold back

And the wind’s up
On the bay here
And the moon’s big
In the sky whether you’re living on the street
Or a condominium
You still need the cash
Are you sitting on a goldmine
Funny you should ask
